Having incorporated new outdoor lighting solutions into the current catalogue, it became clear that our terrace was in need of a makeover. Bordering Vibia’s headquarters, the terrace acts as an extension of the indoor showroom while also providing a spacious venue for meetings and events.
Originally designed in collaboration with Josep Lluís Xuclà, a Barcelona-based designer who has been working with Vibia for many years, we commissioned his studio to undertake the upgrade. The project had two main objectives: to update the existing space with the latest collections and to create an even more inviting environment for future events on the terrace. This new design features virtually all of the existing and recently added outdoor collections and reflects a new chapter in Vibia’s history.
«To create a more recreational terrace, we have equipped a new chill out area with sofas»
Designed to provide a seamless transition from day to night, the terrace has several spaces for informal relaxation and socialising. A variety of lighting solutions allow the terrace to be enjoyed at any time of day or night.
One of the main new features is the addition of a new chill-out space, where a sofa area and coffee table provide an inviting space for relaxed gatherings. The space is lit from above by a single upright lamp in the form of a wide arc.
Out is a Victor Carrasco design that provides diffused, low-contrast lighting that is equally suitable for indoor and outdoor communal spaces. The terrace has several lights in a range of tones that provide pleasant warmth and a touch of romance to the outdoor seating and table areas.
The soft, cosy light of a rechargeable Mayfair Mini provides lighting for the coffee table. Finished in shimmering beige, this stylish design by Diego Fortunato radiates elegance and refinement. A cordless portable lighting solution for both indoor and outdoor use, its pure and refined look is a perfect match for the simple elegance of the space it occupies.
The Empty collection forms a second arrangement of compact additional seating that embodies Vibia’s “Furniture meets light” concept. This Xuclà creation combines table, stool and lamp in a single three-dimensional unit. The geometric structure emits a subtle indirect light from its hidden LED and comes with a new “Graphite Black” finish.
“We retained elements of the original project that continue to perform the function for which they were originally conceived. The pergolas, for example, soften the transition from interior to exterior spaces, while the concrete partitions divide the large space into a number of more intimate spaces”.
Outdoor lighting has a dual function: to create ambience and to provide practical lighting. Vibia presents visitors with a selection of transitional products integrated into the various areas of the terrace.
One such product is Class. This aesthetically refined Sebastian Herkner design offers a powerful transitional light. With its ribbed glass diffuser, this vertical lamp casts soft light over large areas.
The terrace features natural materials, such as the wooden decking, terracotta planters and surrounding gravel. With its natural finish and simple, softly rounded lines, Dots Outdoor blends discreetly with its surroundings. Emitting light from the space between its component parts, this Martín Azúa designed beacon welcomes guests by creating a calmly radiating light effect.
A linear and angular profile defines Palo Alto, another Xuclà creation. Ideal for lighting pathways with diffused downward light, this lamp combines the industrial and the organic, in a shape evoking a tree whose steel branches and thin rows of LEDs project a diffused downward light. Palo Alto can be found in assorted sizes and shapes throughout the newly revamped space.
Bamboo is clearly inspired by the plant from which it takes its name. This slender floor lamp, by Antoni Arola and Enric Rodríguez, blends in with the vegetation on the terrace. As if planted in the gravel and decking, the Bamboo lamps illuminate the concrete partitions, walkways and walls with vivid points of light.
«One of the challenges we faced was to avoid exposure to the sun. To achieve this, we designed large planters with trees and positioned them to provide shade for the main areas of activity»
The terrace is flanked by the high walls of the Vibia headquarters. Discreetly blending into the space, several wall lights complement the surrounding architecture.
Break Plus transforms several wall sections into three-dimensional murals. This collection by Xuclà for Vibia brings compositional form to surfaces that would otherwise remain empty. Whether individually or grouped together, each of these stylised structures projects indirect light in opposite directions, in a subtle dialogue between light and shadow.
As a counterpoint to the minimalist environment in which they are located, a set of Bamboo wall lights dynamically alternates light and shadow. This undulating composition runs along the façade of the building, creating a wave of indirect light that invites the visitor to pass from the interior to the exterior.
With their intricate star-shaped patterns of light and shadow, the Meridiano wall lights bring decorative design to the nakedness of the façade. Like a constellation, a series of wall lights radiates light from an invisible source, drawing luminous star-like shapes on the building’s exterior.
«The new planters made it necessary to relocate the existing ones, which creates a more intimate atmosphere»
In common with Empty, the Meridiano collection also serves as furniture. With its magnetic lighting effect, this creation by Jordi Vilardell & Meritxell Vidal consists of a structure of corrugated steel bars that projects a spectacular interplay of light and shadow, highlighting the texture of the wooden floor on which it rests.
The Break floor lamps are the work of Xuclà & Alemany for Vibia. This collection features two connected bevelled cubes, with light emanating from the intervening space.
Installed in twos and threes at different points on the terrace, this design, with its lacquered rust and concrete finish, blends in perfectly with the prevailing industrial style.
The new terrace layout also features several Wind floor lamps. The defining feature of this collection by Jordi Vilardell is the material: the extraordinarily delicate, lPenthousee-like texture of the fibreglass diffuser invites visitors to gather and relax by its soft light on warm summer evenings.
Vibia invites visitors to enjoy the newly refurbished terrace. Our wide range of elegant and durable outdoor lighting solutions ensures the perfect ambience for outdoor settings, whatever your lighting requirements.
